Almost a year after The Life of a Showgirl arrived, Taylor Swift has given it an extra chapter. She unveiled an expanded edition called The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, which adds four brand-new tracks to the album.

A two-day rollout

Swift moved quickly. She announced a single, “Patient Zero,” on a Tuesday, then revealed the following morning that it was part of a larger release arriving that same Friday. Pre-order pages showed the other three songs: “Cleveland!,” “Pink Clouding” and “Babylon,” listed as tracks 13 through 16.

The songs did not come out as a separate EP. Swift folded them into the existing album, creating a new deluxe edition. The new release also carries cover photography by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, who shot the imagery for the original album.

Why she wrote more songs

In an Instagram post, Swift said the project grew out of gratitude. She credited fans with giving The Life of a Showgirl the biggest first week for an album in history. To mark the anniversary, she traveled to Sweden to celebrate with her collaborators Max Martin and Shellback. The trip turned into a writing session. She said the studio was there, so they did what they always do when they feel something: they wrote more songs. As on the original album, the new tracks were produced by Swift, Martin and Shellback.

The rollout continues

A music video for “Patient Zero” was set to debut during the MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 27. Fans responded quickly online. Google searches for the new songs’ lyrics topped 160,000 in the U.S. within the first four hours of release.

The speculation

Swifties are already reading the release as a clue to what comes next. Many had expected a re-recording of her debut album this fall for its 20th anniversary, and this release complicates that guess. Others see a pattern. Some fans note the “Opalite” video featured three zeros and think The Encore could be the first of three announcements, possibly leading to Taylor Swift (Taylor’s Version) and Reputation (Taylor’s Version). None of this has been confirmed.

Critics aren’t all cheering

Reviews have been mixed. Slant Magazine called the release a superfluous addendum and argued that the new tracks stay too close to the original album’s tone and sound. The review described “Patient Zero” as a song in which Swift guides a distraught ex’s new partner through a rough breakup.

The bottom line

The Encore is a thank-you note to fans, and also a way to keep a chart-dominating album in the conversation as its first anniversary passes. Whether it’s a victory lap or a prelude to bigger news is the question Swifties will be debating until her next announcement.
